Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy and Private Practice

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-directed form of therapy that focuses on reframing thoughts and making them more flexible, and experimenting with new behaviours. Because our thoughts and behaviours are closely tied to how we feel emotionally, changes in these areas can result in improvement in or better tolerance of painful emotions.

When treating OCD, CBT includes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specific treatment to help clients manage their obsessions and compulsions.

CBT is time-limited, collaborative, and involves some between-session practice for clients, such as practicing strategies or monitoring experiences.

  • The fit between psychologist and client is very important. A good working relationship is one in which you feel heard, supported, and comfortable being open, but also challenged to try new things and consider alternative ways of thinking.

I am happy to offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to potential new clients, to learn more about how I work and discuss what you are hoping to achieve.

  • You do not need a referral to seek private practice services from a psychologist in Ontario.

  • In a first session, we will do an assessment of your current experiences, symptoms, and concerns. We will discuss your mental health history and other aspects of your life that are relevant to our work together. Sometimes this assessment takes more than one session.

Following the assessment, we will talk about how Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy works and what your therapy goals are for our time working together.

  • Currently my practice is virtual, so sessions are conducted by video or phone, depending on clients’ preference. If you determine that you prefer in-person services, we will work together to find a referral that fits your needs.

I am licensed to offer therapy to clients in Ontario.

  • Fees are set in accordance with guidelines proposed by the Ontario Psychological Association. OHIP does not cover psychological services, however most extended health benefits offer some coverage and this varies between benefit plans.

Payment for service is due at the end of each session and you will be provided with a receipt that you can submit for reimbursement to your insurance company. At this time, e-transfer or credit card are accepted for appointment payments.

  • Your privacy is very important, and what you share in therapy is confidential. There are some exceptions to this as outlined by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. These exceptions will be discussed in detail during your first session and you will be provided with a written description prior to this.

  • Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or appointments missed without notice, will be charged the full session fee.
